Why is this important?
Right now, social media platforms are rife with hate and disinformation that undermine our very democracy. We are calling on the biggest social media companies to implement the safety protocols demanded by the Change the Terms coalition ahead of the 2022 midterm elections that will stop the spread of hateful, violent, misleading and false content across languages for the 2022 elections and beyond.
The world’s biggest social media platforms have become a playground for disinformation and the companies behind these platforms profit from it. But in the lead up to the 2022 midterm elections, there is an opportunity for all of us, the people who these platforms rely on, to demand change.
It is entirely within a company’s control to fix what’s wrong with their platforms and change the terms that govern how we engage with their products. As a part of the Change the Terms coalition, we’ve made it easy for companies by outlining exactly the steps they need to take:
- Fix the Algorithm: Stop promoting the most incendiary, hateful content
- Protect People Equally: Staff up to protect democracy for all, across all languages
- Show Us the Receipts: Disclose your business models and moderation practices
The growing online disinformation crisis is damaging to our democracy and our communities. These companies must take action to fix it now.
Join Kairos and the Change the Terms coalition to demand that Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube stop the spread of hateful, violent, misleading and false content across languages in the run up to the 2022 elections and beyond.
